Tips for Better Pictures

Today's e-tip:

Changing filters
doesn't have to be a pain!

Your digital camera doesn't see the way you do. Understanding the differences in the way you and your camera sees is the start of taking great pictures.
Changing filters doesn't have to be a pain!
Note: We have no affiliation with this product, except as a very happy user.

Most photo filters are screw-on. Your lens has a threaded front and the filter screws onto the lens.

If you've spent any time with these filters, you know how much of a pain they can be. Sometimes they just don't want to screw onto your lens; sometimes you cross-thread them onto your lens; and sometimes you just can't unscrew them. Who designed this system??

Well, I don't use a lot of filters. The only screw-on filters I routinely use are a circular polarizer and a Neutral-density (ND) filter. (I don't use "protection" filters, although you may.)

A Solution!
About 3 or 4 years ago, I met a fellow who invented a solution. He called it Xume. About a year or so ago, he sold his product to Manfrotto, who now sells it. I've been using the Xume system for about 3 years now, and absolutely LOVE it!

It allows you to attach your filters to your lens by magnetism! It's incredibly simple and effective. Once you've used Xume, you'll wonder how you ever lived without it!

The Xume system has 3 components:

  • Lens Adapter (screws onto your lens)
  • Filter Adapter (screws onto your filter)
  • Lens Cap
This is what it looks like:
Xume System

Before you start...
You will want to read our eTip on using one filter size for all of your lenses (read it here).

Lens Adapter
If you only have one lens, than you only need one lens adapter.  Otherwise, you'll want to get a lens adapter for each lens. You screw the lens adapter onto each lens and leave it there.

Filter Adapter
If you only have one filter, then you only need one filter adapter.  Otherwise, you'll want to get a filter adapter for each filter you intend to use. You screw the filter adapters onto each filter and leave them there.

Now, you're ready
Using the Xume system couldn't be easier. You just put the filter onto the lens and it attaches automatically through magnetism - and the magnetic attraction is deceivingly strong!

We don't sell Xume, and have no affiliation with the product, except as a very happy user. You can purchase Xume at B&H, Adorama and other retailers that carry Manfrotto products.

Try it
If you try it, I'm sure you'll like it. Rather than recreate a video, here's a simple YouTube video that I found that shows how it works.
