Tips for Better Pictures

Today's e-tip:

My strategy for
Filters

Do you have more than one lens for your DSLR or mirrorless camera?

Having more than one lens can create problems when it comes to things like lens caps and filters.

Different lenses often have different filter-thread sizes. This means that they use a different sized lens cap and filter.

If you want to use a polarizing filter with each lens, you have to buy one filter for each size lens.

This can be very expensive! And having different-sized lens caps for each lens can be a real pain.
Filters

A simple and inexpensive solution
The easy solution is to use "step-up" rings. These rings come in all sizes.

For example, let's assume you have two lenses: one has a 55mm filter size and one has a 72mm filter size,

You could purchase a very inexpensive 55mm to 72mm step-up ring (usually less than $10) for your lens with the 55mm filter size. The step-up ring will modify the lens to accept a 72mm filter, the same as your other lens. By doing this, you can use one filter size for BOTH lenses.

This becomes much more important if you have more lenses with different filter sizes as well.

Think about the future!
Using the above example, you might consider buying a ste-up ring for BOTH lenses, considereing that someday, you may have a lens that accepts a larger filter. The largest commonly available lenses accept a 77mm filter. Thus, you might considering steping-up both lenses as follows:

55mm to 77mm
72mm to 77mm

This will protect you if you eventually get a lens with a 77mm filter size. (I actually have a lens with an unusual 82mm filter size. It's a telephoto lens, and I use a step-down ring with it (82mm->77mm) - luckily it doesn't vignette!)

Now, when you buy filters, you ONLY buy 77mm filters. With the step-up rings, you can use your 77mm filters with any lens you use.

You will also need to buy larger lens caps as well, but you can usually get these pretty inexpensively.

What to buy?
When it comes to buying lens caps and step-up rings, you can buy either a name brand (i.e., Nikon, Canon, etc) or you can buy a no-name brand. I always opt for the no-name brand, as they are MUCH less expensive, and do the same job just as well!

(these are my preferred step-up rings - they're inexpensive and are no different than the "expensive" brands! http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/search?atclk=Brand_General+Brand&sts=ma&N=4291432579&Ntt=step-up+rings )

When it comes to buying filters, however, I don't scrimp. Cheap filters can seriously affect image quality. ALWAYS opt for multi-coated filters, as they won't degrade images the way non multi-coated filters will. Multi-coated filters often cost between $50 and $120 each, but, IMHO, are worth it.

Happy shooting!!
